History of our Parish
What is now Saint Nicholas parish had its origins back in 1998
when a group of Orthodox Christians in Myrtle Beach, desiring
services in English, decided to meet in a motel room and hold
reader services. Through much persistence and effort this group
of faithful members went from the motel room to the local
YMCA and then from there they were able to buy a building in
Surfside Beach, South Carolina. With a stable address and
group of devoted members the tiny mission was making strides
and began to grow. It was at this time that a very significant
event occurred in the life of our parish, Mr. Nicholas Pandis
and his family donated a large tract of land. This donation
would eventually be the financial seed that would allow the
parish to grow. Up until 2003, various priests served the needs
of the parish until His Eminence, Metropolitan PHILIP assigned
the parish its first full time priest, Fr. Gabriel Bullock. In fact,
the mission was meeting at 4:00 PM on Sundays before the
Metropolitan assigned a priest. Fresh from Saint Vladimir’s
Orthodox Theological Seminary, Fr. Gabriel shared the desire to
establish a pan-Orthodox parish and also to do missionary work.
With a full time priest in place, Saint Nicholas began to grow
steadily until it became clear that the parish had outgrown its
location in Surfside Beach. In August of 2005, the voting
membership of the parish made the difficult but necessary
decision to sell the church’s land holdings and to buy an existing
building. The land was sold and we found a building that was
located in central Myrtle Beach with the first Divine Liturgy
being held on September 2, 2007. His Grace, Bishop ANTOUN
presided over the consecration of the new church on
October 7, 2007.
